Artist Statement

My work explores themes of identity through the domestic, culture and human connections. Taking inspiration from my own cultural experiences as a Welsh woman, and by familial memories, I have more recently begun to explore notions of archive and palimpsest. My practice is deeply connected to the Welsh word ‘Hiraeth’- a nostalgic longing for something, of home and culture. As a bilingual artist I find myself naturally floating between Welsh and English and this duality is something I’ve always tried to explore in my past and most recent works.

I am interested in experimentation with multiple techniques and mediums, combining them to create a juxtaposition between soft and hard, cold, and warm. The works are held in a liminal space between painting and textiles and more sculptural experiments. I have recently started working on a larger scale with installation works.

There is a level of naiveté to some of the more recent work, with the idea of the unfinished and the child-like, driving from fragmented memories that come with growing up. I want the viewer to sense the idea of childhood and the fractured memories we carry with us as adults.

 Datganiad Arlunydd

Mae fy nghwaith yn archwilio y themau o hunaniaeth, y domestig a cysulltiadau rhyngt pobl. Rwy’n cymryd ysbrydoliaeth o fy mhrofiadau fel Cymraes ac wrth fy atfgofion teuluol, yn fwy ddiweddarach rwyf wedi dechrau edrych i fewn i’r syniad o archif a’r ‘palimpsest’. Mae fy gwaith yn delio efo hiraeth a’r gorffennol yn amal. Fel artist sy’n siarad Cymareg a Saesneg rwy’n hoffi defnyddio y deuoliaeth yn fy gwaith.

Mae gennyf diddordeb mewn arbrofi efo llawer o dechnegau a defnyddiau gwahanol i greu cyfosodiad rhwng y meddal, y caled, yr oer ac y cynnes. Mae’r gwaith yn cael ei gosod yn y canol fan rhwng peintio ac tecstiliau ac hefyd arbrofion cerlfluniau. Yn diweddar rwyf wedi decharau gweithio ar maint llawer yn fwy a gwaith installation.

Mae yna elfen mwy plentynaidd efo fy gwaith diweddar,  efo’r syniad o’r naif a’r anorffenedig, wedi ei gwthio ymlaen efo atgofion toredig sydd yn dod efy tyfu i fynu. Rwy eisiau yr gwyliwr i gael syniad o plentyndod ar atgofion drylliedig rydym yn i chario efo’n.
